Today's How To Be Organized Articles
The work-life balance
Balance. It's a nice word but the reality is hard to pin down. It may not even put us on the right track in our 21st century quest for fulfillment and happiness. In this article we will talk about the integration of work and family life, beginning not with the workplace and the employer's role in sorting things out, but with the person and her priorities. Generally than people talk about work-life balance they mean the challenge of managing their family commitment when they've got children, while juggling the demands of a career. That's the traditional focus, but the concept has evolved quite a bit. There are now many younger people in the workforce, in their late 20s and early 30s, who may not even have home or family but they want a sense of balance in their life. Often we are thinking of some sort of perfection, where nothing is out of place, there's no stress, and this of course is unrealistic. It automatically means a trade-off between work and life. If I give more time to my family I won't be able to do my job properly, or if I spend more time on the job my family will suffer. Yet I want to be able to have it all, to do it all, right now. Let's think about integration, which means bringing the various pieces of our lives into a cohesive whole. We each have many roles, goals, responsibilities and life plans. We have to get it together. The attractive idea of finding ways to bring life into a unity will give us the harmony and happiness we seek. Experience shows what people who have very clear priorities and their own clear definition of success succeed best at balancing their lives. They know what's most important in their lives. These are people who can say, before it happens: If I have to make a choice, if work and family come head to head, I know what my biggest priority is. People who realize it may have slow their career for a period of time, perhaps while a child is younger, and have a less demanding job so they can have more time at home. And they can be at peace with that, because their definition of success is not necessarily the one that society tells them. Usually we have to just go through life and let the new promotion or the new demands of the job dictate what you do, to feel you don't have a choice. This is not balanced life road. We need to stop and reflect, communicate more with your husband, your wife, your manager at work, and basically be more pro-active. The today's truth is that we have too much to do. Technology has changed things and made people accessible 24 hours a day, encroaching on the peaceful time people used to have. Yet some things don't change. We still have 24 hours a day. We all have the same amount of time and how we use it comes down to a personal choice. The disorganization traits usually come from avoiding the choice and try to do too much. Even a simple thing like, What are we going to have for dinner tonight? can become a huge job if we feel, Oh, I've a lot of work and will not be able to do grocery shopping. Obviously, if we have the knowledge and skills to make something simpler than we're going to gain more time. This is what AcePlanner is built on - using good systems to simplify daily tasks so you don't spend inordinate amounts of time on work. For balanced life planning and other basic management skills have to be used at home as well as in the workplace. One of the reasons why many people prefer going out to work to working at home is what we're very organized in the workplace, we use time management there, and then we come home and just ride the waves, consuming ourselves with the latest problem that has cropped up. However there's nothing wrong with wanting to go out to work. We do need multiple interests to enrich our lives and many times we have talents that we need to give to the workplace and to the world. But it is true that work on the job is often more attractive because it is more project-oriented and very linear, and at the end of that piece of work we get the praise and a sense of accomplishment, whereas at home every day it's the same thing. Human beings have certain basic needs that have to be taken care of every day, and although we can feel a sense of accomplishment that we have organized something at home, it's soon going to be dirtied again, or another meal is going to have to be put on the table. And this means changing your sense of where you get your satisfaction - not just from accomplishing the task or from the process of doing it, but from the motive. We are all expecting a reward or praise for completed work. Lack of reward will kill our desire to work what leads to reduced productivity. This is why we prefer working for others than doing something for ourselves. Promise yourself a reward for completing each task or finishing the total job. For example let yourself watch an interesting movie when you finish developing page or new promotion plan. Staying Organized! Organize Your Life For Success!
Organizing the content of your life based on your needs is a best practice for managing your time, resources and money and is an essential first step if you are to fully achieve your potential in life. The reasons for this are simple. An organized clear mind leads to clear and objective goals, which in turn leads to you being able to achieve what you set out to do. A critical first step then in staying organized is to set up a system of resource planning and clerical needs that allows you to plan out your time effectively, and allocate where you are going to spend it. In short this means such steps as getting a day planner so that you can plan ahead. Getting appropriate stationary systems and office space in place, and also getting yourself a filing cabinet, or at the very least some kind of filing system! It would certainly be true to say that staying organized then is not something that lots of people do naturally! At first it can even seem slightly stifling, especially if you are used to totally going with the flow of what each day brings. In truth this is ok. It IS good to be spontaneous on occasions, but in general it is vital to plan out what you need to do in a particular time frame, because otherwise it is all to easy to simply become distracted! (For help with Goal Setting you can visit http://www.goalsettingnews.com) All of us know this to be true if we think about it from the viewpoint of our own lives. For example, when we surf the web we find ourselves flitting between sites, and before you know it a couple of hours have past! Now, don't get me wrong. That is one of the joys of the internet, and of life in General. But it is nevertheless a time stealer that staying focused and staying organised could have helped to negate. So then am I saying that Staying Organized should mean robbing you of the juice of life? Robbing you of the spontaneity? NO! No! NO! For me the exact opposite is true. Staying organized is about finishing the day's tasks and having crammed far more good stuff in! In short it is the exact opposite of a spoil sport! ;) You should know your own strengths and weaknesses when it comes to this area (clue... Staying organized means doing more of the things you like!) and communicate them to yourself regularly to analyze that your wants and needs are being met effectively. Then organize your time based on that feedback. Keep with the program. Stay Organized, and Organize YOUR Life For Success! Why do you need to use a To Do List? I can hear you mumbling, “what a stupid question”. Up to a few days ago, I thought the same thing. With out a To Do List how do you stay organized? Now I believe a more basic reason exists. Maybe, you already understand, a To Do List on a more metaphysical level, maybe the obvious escaped me. If the obvious escaped me, maybe it escaped you as well. A Little Background. I have taken many time management courses. I am a fan of Steven Covey and “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” I’ve worked with first, second, third and forth generation time management approaches. Over the years I’ve improved but never at a fast enough pace to keep up with the growing workload. Anyone out there experience the same thing? Time management subscribes to a universal law: Nature abhors a vacuum. The more time you free up, the more work there is to do in that freed up time. You probably know someone who handles the various task required of them with aplomb, never break out in a sweat, and never fail to meet a deadline. Maybe you are one of those lucky individuals. I am not. I’ve walked around with a huge three ring binder with daily planning sheets, which contain all your worldly data. I have worked with pocket size, organizers, with little notebooks stuffed in pockets and of course the ever-familiar To Do List. To begin with, I am not the most organized person in the world, but I am a lot better than many others. Not being the worst however, changes nothing, except to make me feel a little better than someone else, which is childish, if you think about it. Resigned to my fate, I decided to live with my handicap. Lots of people have handicaps of one sort or another. Even Tiger Woods has a handicap. Does this sound like a lot of justification to you? Your right, but no other solution suggested itself to me till this week when revelation struck. A Stumble in the Woods I’m going to change the subject for a minute or two. I like to walk in the woods near my home. I take my two dogs, my backpack, and a lunch and off into the woods we go. The trail I use is a rough up hill and down workout. Yet I do some of my best thinking in deep silence. This particular week I spent a lot of time focusing of my inner being, attempting to still myself and let the awesome peace of the forest filter down through my soul. The day before everything went smoothly. I managed to relax, breathe in the vast stillness of the forest all around me. I felt centered, calm and released from the vortex of time swirling all around me. I looked on this as a metaphysical achievement. Could I finally be getting all those books and tapes about the Laws of Attractions and Zen? Unfortunately, the very next day contradicted me. My mind kept wandering. One innocent thought here, lead to a thought there lead to some horrible moment out of my past, or a yet to happen argument with a co-worker. Annoyed I tried harder to focus on building the inner peace, bring the silence of the forest inside or me. Of course, the harder you try the worse things get in the metaphysical universe. Climbing up some steep stairs cut into a slope, my feet went from under me. The lower part of my body, just below the waist slammed into the wooden step riser. That hurt. Instead of cursing however, I found myself laughing. The universe wants to get me to pay attention. The dogs came back to question my lack of mobility. Up I got and off we went again. I continued to stumble over rocks, branches and cotton wood fluff, all the time my mind followed its own unique paths down dead end alleys. At the turn-around point, I felt happy to sit down while still in one piece. Then mercifully my brain shut down. I stopped to listen to the forest. The quiet inculcated my whole body with a deep sense of well-being, and peace. This is it, this is what I’m searching for, this deep tranquility of soul. In that state you touch the soul of all life, you fuse one with the all. In this state, I asked myself one little question. Why? I would like to say the explosion that followed uprooted trees and made the earth tremble. The truth is, the dogs didn’t even blink, as I came to an understanding of a To Do List. A To Do List is a file transfer protocol that allows you to take a metaphysical quality like a thought and up load it to the physical universe in the form of paper and words. This allows the mind to stop worrying about it, hence inner peace that allows converse with the universe. Snap! The trick is to upload the right file. If you put things on the To Do List that are not in the file, nothing happens, except to create more work than you need. Instead, write down only what is churning in your mind. Here are a few rules I found worked well with my new understanding. Write your list down in the order they occur. Don’t second-guess or question: don’t interfere with the upload. Do the list in the order you wrote it down. You (metaphysically speaking) dictated the list in the correct order. Only skip an item if you need to do more research in order to complete the task. Other wise do the list in sequence. Write the list the night before. That prevents the busy mind syndrome, which leads to lack of sleep. What you don’t accomplish, usually the stuff on the bottom of the list, carry over, again at the bottom of the list. If they are important, you (Metaphysically) would have placed them higher. That’s it. Once I realized why I needed a TO Do List two things happened. I stopped 70 % of the distractions going on in my head and found I could hold that silence of the forest inside of me through the whole day, which calmed me and brought me more in tune with the universe. I began to get my To Do Lists done! Mr Grimshawe has been writing most of his life. I believe there are 4 essential steps you must take if you want to succeed with any project. A project is anything that requires a plan. It can be simple like making a plan to go to a movie, or could be complicated like setting up an Internet business. But simple or not, if you want your project to succeed you need to take the these four steps: Step 1 Picture the Purpose. Before you start any project you need to ask yourself what you really want. This might sound obvious, but it is amazing the number of people who don't know what they really want when they start a project. When you have answered that question you then need to ask yourself why you want what you want. This is very important as many people want something but don't really know why they want it. In the case of the movie your answer might be that your favourite star is in it. To the Internet business you might answer that you want to work from home so you can spend more time with your family. Step 2 Plan the Procedure. Once you have found the answers to the questions above you then need to ask yourself how you can get what you want. The best way to answer this question is to imagine you already have what you want! Now that might sound strange, but if you think about it, when you answered your first question you had some sort of picture in your mind. And when you answered your second question that picture must have become clearer. Now all you have to do is make the picture clearer still by imagining that you already have what you want. Then you ask yourself how you got it! In the case of the movie that should be easy. The steps to an Internet business maybe harder to see, but if you keep thinking, keep imagining you have what you want, something amazing will happen. You will start to see the steps you need to take. You will begin to see opportunities you haven't seen before. This may sound like magic but it is actually the Law of Attraction working for you. This is the law that works for everyone who truly wants success. Step 3 Prepare with Patience. So many people fail to prepare a project. They have an idea and they plunge right in. Sometimes it works but mainly it doesn't! You need to prepare both mentally and physically. If you are not prepared mentally the chances are you will fail physically. Preparation also requires patience. You would like to get going immediately but sometimes you have to wait. Maybe your project requires a lot of practice before you are ready to go. Or maybe you might have to rely on others who are not ready when you are. Step 4 Perform with Pleasure. So you now you know what you want, why you want it and how to get it. You have prepared and practised and you are ready to go. However if your project involves other people, it may take time to get what you want. They may not have the same agenda or the same priorities as you. This is where you have got to keep focused on what you want to make happen. The way to do this is to continually imagine how great you will feel when you have got what you wanted. You must enjoy the whole "journey" to your success. Ask any successful person if they really enjoy what they do and I guarantee the answer will be yes! One last thing, keep records of your activity, they can help you when things are not going as well or as fast as you want. They can also remind you of the steps you took to get what you wanted. The importance of a sound roof. Your home is designed to protect you, your family and your property from the elements, and the roof is the one part of the house that takes the most damage in providing you with this invaluable service. Yet it is the one area of the home that is most overlooked by people looking to purchase a home and by those looking to upgrade or maintain their existing home. However, without adequate maintenance and regular care your roof is liable to take leaks and can become damaged very easily in the worst of conditions. The annual maintenance of your roof Checking your roof should become an annual job and if you don’t feel confident enough to know where to look then you should consult a professional who will come and do the job for you. Using a certified roofing contractor means that you can be sure the person you use is a professional who knows exactly what to look for and can give you the best advice if any work does happen to need doing. The perpetual beating of the sun, rain, wind, hail, snow and forming of ice puts pressure on any material or substance and your roof is by no means an exception to this rule. A certified roofing contractor can tell you whether you have adequate protection to ensure that your roof keeps up the work it is doing. Going up on the roof yourself When small cracks start to appear in a roof a leak may not become immediately visible and often the water can run away to areas you are unable to see. Without actually getting up into the roof itself you may not be able to see these small areas of damage yourself and clambering on the roof yourself is not everyone’s idea of a fun Saturday afternoon. The services of a certified roofing contractor should be called on to prevent damage to your roof and possible personal injury. A qualified roofing contractor A certified roofing contractor is experienced and qualified enough to complete any job from certifying your roof (usually for two years, during which time they are responsible for repairs) to completely ripping down your old roof and replacing it with a new and more effective one. A certified roofing contractor can advise you of the best tools, the best materials and the best systems to use to ensure that you are giving your house the protection it truly needs. Finding a certified roofing contractor To find a certified roofing contractor you have several options available to you. The first is word of mouth; ask family and friends if they have used the service of a good certified roofing contractor. Never simply take someone else’s word immediately though and be sure to do your own research. Contact the people responsible for giving out licenses in your state and ask them for a list of people who are registered roofing contractors. This way you will have already verified the certificate before you even contact them. Searching for roofing contractors? Visit http://www.roofer911.com now for all your roofing needs. Self Esteem: You Are Not Who You Think You Are
David sat in front of me at one of my five-day intensive workshops. A successful businessman with a wife and two grown children, David believed that he was not good enough. ?I?m insufficient,? he said. ?I?m inadequate.? I looked at this kind man and felt deep sadness for him. He did not know who he was. ?Why do you believe that?? I asked. ?I didn?t do well in school, and I?ve made lots of mistakes in my life.? ?So you are basing your worth on your performance, right?? ?Of course.? David could not conceive of any other way of defining his worth other than through his performance ? which he never saw as good enough. I asked David to look inside ? at the essence of himself - and tell me what he sees. All he saw was emptiness. ?David, please close your eyes. Now imagine a wonderful being who loves you very much. Who comes to mind?? ?My grandfather. He died when I was young, but he really loved me.? ?Good. Now imagine that you are seeing yourself through the eyes of your grandfather. What does your grandfather see when he looks at you?? ?He sees a bright and creative little boy, who is very kind and caring. A loving little boy. A little boy who is funny and likes to laugh, and likes to make other people laugh.? ?Is there anything wrong with this little boy? Anything inadequate or insufficient?? ?Oh no! He is a wonderful little boy.? ?David, this is who you really are. You are not your performance. Your performance will come and go and at some point you might retire and not perform at all. Yet that does not mean that you are, therefore, worthless. Your worth is in who you are, not in what you do. Your worth in intrinsic.? David realized that, because of his highly critical and rejecting parents, he had always been trying to prove himself and always came up short in their eyes. As a result of seeing himself as unworthy and inadequate, he did not treat himself well. He treated himself the way his parents had treated him ? with criticism and neglect. He was always trying to take care of everyone else, but rarely thought about taking care of himself. He was constantly abandoning himself emotionally, just as he had been emotionally abandoned by his parents. ?David, if you chose to see yourself as your grandfather saw you rather than how your parents saw you, how would you feel about yourself and how would you treat yourself?? ?I?ve just been thinking about that. I just realized that I treat my dog better than I treat myself! I would never judge my dog the way I judge myself.? ?So what would you do differently if you saw yourself the way your grandfather sees you?? ?I would stop judging myself as insufficient and inadequate. I?m a really good person. I am not at all insufficient or inadequate as a person. And I choose my friends based on who they are as people ? not on their performance. So I obviously value the very qualities that I possess!? ?What else would you do if you really valued who you are?? ?I would listen to my own feelings and take care of my own needs instead of taking care of everyone else?s feelings and needs. I would no longer see it as selfish to take care of myself instead of taking care of everyone else. I would be at least as attentive to myself as I am to my dog!? David was glowing. He was discovering who he really is, not who he thought he was. People often think that their worth ? who they really are ? is based on looks and performance. Yet these qualities are transitory. What is real and eternal is who you are in your heart and soul. If you shift your definition of your worth from outer to inner, you will stop trying to prove yourself. You will know that you are already a beautiful being, totally deserving of love. Margaret Paul, Ph.D. best-selling author of eight books, and co-creator of the powerful Inner Bonding healing process. How To Spice Up Your Lecture Notes For Better Grades
When taking notes on a lecture, there are two extremes that present themselves -- to take exceedingly full notes, or to take almost no notes. One can err in either direction. At first, a full blow-by-blow transcript of the lecture might seem best. However, you'll find that this isn't necessary. In fact, you might see that this style of note-taking might end up hampering your efforts. Many lecturers will highlight your assigned reading the night before. This isn't worth writing down twice, as you should have taken notes on your reading yourself. If you occupy your attention with the task of copying the lecture verbatim, you do not have time to think, but become merely an automatic recording machine. This is good news for those of you that transcribe your class time! Experienced stenographers say that they form the habit of recording so automatically that they fail utterly to comprehend the meaning of what is said. You as a student cannot afford to have your attention so distracted from the meaning of the lecture. Therefore, you should REDUCE your classroom writing to a minimum. Probably the chief reason why students are so eager to secure full lecture notes is that they fear to trust their memory. Such fears should be put at rest, for your mind will retain facts if you pay close attention and make logical associations during the time of impression. Keep your mind free, then, to work upon the subject-matter of the lecture. Debate mentally with the speaker. This is called Active Listening. Question your professor's statements, comparing them with your own experience or with the results of your study. Ask yourself frequently, ?Is that true?? The essential thing is to maintain an attitude of mental activity, and to avoid anything that will reduce this and make you passive. Do not think of yourself as a vat into which the instructor pumps knowledge. Regard yourself rather as an active force, quick to perceive and to comprehend meaning, deliberate in acceptance and firm in retention. Active listening is the key to note-taking. This is ironic, considering that we associate note-taking with transcribing. Let your notes represent the logical progression of thought in the lecture. Strive above all else to secure the skeleton -? the framework upon which the lecture is hung. A lecture is a logical structure, and the form in which it is presented is the outline. This outline, then, is your chief concern. In the case of some lectures it is an easy matter. The lecturer may place the outline in your hands beforehand, may present it on the black-board, or may give it orally. Some lecturers, too, present their material in such clear-cut divisions that the outline is easily followed. Others, however, are very difficult to follow in this regard. In arranging an outline you will find it wise to adopt some device by which the parts will stand out prominently, and the progression of thought will be indicated with proper subordination of titles. Adopt some system at the beginning of your college course, and use it in all your notes. In other words, be consistent! You have enough to worry about in learning the material. You don't need to spend mental energy trying to decipher your own note-taking system. The example here may serve as a model, using first the Roman numerals, then capitals, then Arabic numerals: I. II. A. B. 1. 2. a. b. (1) (2) (a) (b) Being a transcription machine does not equate to being a good notetaker. Not only will you NOT be learning effectively, but you're pretty much wasting your time. When you use your class time more wisely, you'll find yourself able to easily recall material come exam time. Put those last-minute cram sessions to an end! Better College Grades is a 100% free resource to help students achieve scholastic success in the smartest and most efficient manner. http://www.bettercollegegrades.com Dream Interpretation of Places in Your Dreams (Part 1)
Had an odd dream lately where you found yourself in the most unlikely places? Our dreams are always telling us something, and the venues and settings in our dreams contribute a whole new layer and impact to their meanings. Here are analyses of places you visit (or will visit yet) in your dreams. Cliff Obviously, cliffs are signs of hardships and obstacles, but not necessarily so. If you dream you are on the edge of a cliff, looking down, it means you are facing obstacles in life which need a wider perspective from you. Falling into the ravine however means you need to regain your balance in real life, so be extra careful. Attic Attic rooms always have a scary, claustrophobic connotation with them, so if you dream of being in an attic, watch out if it is a cluttered, gloomy, and abandoned place. A clean and well-lit attic is a good sign though. Attics symbolize plans we haven't yet gotten around to making as well as the current state of our minds. Ferris Wheel Dreaming of Ferris Wheels signals either a happy return to childhood or a vicious cycle you want to end once and for all. It may be that you need to loosen a bit in your life and start enjoying risks; then again it could also be that you want to escape from the pressures of daily routine. Hot Air Balloon Ride Not many have the chance to ride in a hot-air balloon, so dreaming of it means you haven'te been generous to yourself lately, and that you need to treat yourself to something you haven't done before, or something luxurious. After all, a balloon ride is adventurous and always exhilarating. On the other hand, you could also be concerned about your relationship with people; and you either need to escape or you want to be looked up. Cemetery Cemeteries are not always dreadful places, portending death and disaster. Cemeteries, in fact, can signal death of something you need to get rid of: a guilt, a vice, a sadness, or anger. Cemeteries can mean rebirth then. On the down side, dreaming of dark, open grave cemeteries can mean your fear of death, or concern about health. Bathroom Bathrooms are private enclosures, so dreams of being inside a bathroom can either mean an urgent need for cleansing or self-renewal, or a search for privacy, a hiding place where you can do things without anyone judging you. When you can't find the bathroom in your dream, it signifies that you are having difficulties in expressing your emotions or satisfying your urges. Beach The beach is a delicate meeting point of water and sand, which translate into the two states of your mind--the sand being the physical, tangible mind, while the ocean, its fleeting and spiritual counterpart. Dreaming of a being on the beach means a decision that needs your attention, depending on which state of your mind you choose to rule over. Generally, when you are willing to rent a furnished apartment, you will be asked to fill in an application form by the landlord or the property management and you are ought to be asked to pay an amount of money for them to look over your application form($20 or $30 which should cover the costs for running your credit card). The application form for the furnished apartments is a typical one asking you to relate your name, current address, Social Security Number, workplace and monthly wage. These may vary from one apartment to another, yet these are the aspects of interest in what you are concerned, because this way they can decide if you are able to pay the rent. In the case of Americans, you should know that they spend 20 up to 30 percent of their monthly wages for the rent. Of course, no landlord would accept you spend more than 30 percent on it as there are other costs you must pay for the furnished apartment and a higher percentage would be unacceptable. If you do not have a stable wage or income another person must guarantee for you and consign the lease so that he or she could cover the payment if you are not doing it. The contract for renting is a type of list for rights and duties involving both parts:you and the administrator. You must be very careful and read it before you sign it. If they agree on your application form than you have the right to enter in possession of the furnished apartment for the agreed period of time. This lease or contract for renting fixes the obligations for both parts and the duration of the contract which is in between 6 months and a year. You and the landlord must agree to respect all the terms of the contract or the contract may be released. You should know that the landlord may ask for a damage account which renders the value of a month's rent and if you decide to bring a pet with you the value of the deposit may be higher. After the contract is finished the administrator is sure to check the actual state of the apartment and may take a sum of money from the damage deposit if he considers that the apartment was not looked after appropriately. Of course, the situation of 'normal tear and wear' is encountered every time but the damages may be worse this being the cause for the necessity of a damage deposit. All in all, no problems should appear if you stick to the terms of the contract and do not bring damages to the furnished apartment. You cannot leave the apartment before the deadline of the contract, as this is a main term of the contract. Be very careful to comply with the terms of that lease so that you could not be found responsible for any mistake.
