Probably the most common element that I see in clients who can't get things done is interruption. The kids, spouse, or other obligations are always "getting in the way" of their music careers. The problem isn't usually the interruption though...it's the people being interrupted. There is something about most people which makes them feel they should be accessible at all times. We've got mobile phones, pagers, a fax, email, and dozens of other ways to let people get in touch with us. And all that stuff is great, but that doesn't mean we have to use it all the time. If you've ever tried to call my office, you'll get voice mail...and it's not because we're not around. We don't answer the phone because calls keep us from getting things done. You may be thinking... "What if the person calling is stuck on the side of the road and needs help?" That person knows they'll get voice mail on my line, so they'll call somebody else. But the truth is, most nothing that you're interrupted by is nearly this important. Let’s face it. You know there’s something more you can contribute than feel isolated in your 9-to-5. A few years later, he moved with his family to the city of Chittagong for his father to run a jewelry business. He was always the studious type but also interested in activities and travel that would complement his studies, such as being involved in the Boy Scouts and the World Scouts Jamboree. During his teen and adolescent years, not only did he travel through Europe and Asia by road to experience cultural activities, but also as thespian means to enhance his drama acting performances. From 1957 to 1961 he completed his B.A. and M.A. to join the ranks of the Bureau of Economics. Starting off as a research assistant, he was later appointed as a lecturer in economics at a college in Chittagong, the same city where he had spent much of his youth. He was soon offered a Fulbright Scholarship to study in the United States and obtained his Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University in the United States in 1969 and became an assistant professor in economics at Middle Tennessee States University in 1972. However in 1976, his research and visits to some of the poorest nearby villages began to channel into a vision that he saw the world desperately needed. He realized that very small loans could make a huge impact to a poor person. Yet traditional banks would not make small-sized, or micro-loans, even at equitable interest rates to the poor since they were considered repayment risks. Drawing from leadership inspiration from Dr. Khan, a rural development expert, and from what he saw could help both traditional banks as well as the poor, this man by the name of Muhammad Yunus finally succeeded in securing these micro-loans from a government bank to lend to a part of the country’s poor in December 1976. Other banks provided loans to the government bank to help fund the loaned business projects and was later renamed Grameen Bank, which stands for “of village.” To ensure the repayment of these loans, the Grameen Bank uses support or “solidarity groups” to apply together for loans and to use individual members as co-guarantors of repayment. Not only would individual members be held accountable for fiscal repayment, but they would also support each other’s efforts towards their ventured advancements. To date the Grameen Bank has issued more than $6 billion to over 7 million borrowers and offers loans to various types of public as well as private projects. The Grameen model has inspired very similar efforts throughout developing nations including industrialized nations such as the United States. When you first bring your profession home and begin your stay at home business, you will soon yearn for that tiny little cubicle that you had when you were at an office working for someone else. At least when you were in your own cubicle, you were able to turn your back on impositions and get your work done. However, in an at home atmosphere, this does not always happen. When working for an employer, usually it was a nine to five job where your productivity did not have that much influence on your paycheck at the end of the week. This is not so with your own business. Your salary is DIRECTLY proportional to your productivity. You will need to learn early on in your business how to combat these interruptions, stay focused and on task or you will not be in business for yourself for very long. To be able to overcome your distractions, you will need to recognize where they are coming from. Are they self imposed or are they from family and friends? One self-imposed distraction that can be extremely disruptive is procrastination. It is also easy to fall off task when we have too many interests and try to do all of them at once. This may seem like multi-tasking but really you are just spinning your wheels and exhausting yourself. Self-inflicted distractions are the most difficult to conquer but it can be done. By following a few simple steps, you will have no problem winning against the time wasters. 1. Quiet Time: It is not necessary to step into your office and become involved in the first task on hand immediately. Take a moment to sit and look at your computer and look out of the window. Better yet, step outside for a moment in the morning sun and clear your mind of the daily family activities. This is what you would normally do on your commute from your home to a normal job at an office. Take ten minutes in the morning to begin the transition from family/house life to work life. Begin to think about the projects that are a priority for the day. 2. Create a To Do List: After you have spent a moment “commuting” to work, begin to create a to do list of the projects and tasks that need to be done. It is okay to add to this list throughout the day for additional items that you might have forgotten about. When creating your list, do not just write down a general idea of the project. Give your task a name and break it into milestones. This will eliminate procrastination and make the task easier to manage. This is especially important for long-term projects. Each time you cross off an item on your to do list, it will give you a feeling of accomplishment. 3. Have a Set Schedule for Tasks: Most employees have a set time to work such as your old “nine to five” job. It is also important to follow this same rule when working from home. Have a set time that you will begin work and close up shop at a certain time. Since you own the business, you can choose if you want to work ten hours straight through or break your day into two work periods of five hours each. Also, set a fixed time to answer your email and other daily tasks. You do not have to answer every email that comes to you within minutes of receiving it. Sometimes it is even easier to just turn off your email program all together until your set time. 4. Shut the Door! With smaller children, you will need to address each issue as the need arises. That is not so with older children. They will understand when you tell them you need to work from x to y. Hire an in-home babysitter for younger children or enlist an aunt or grandparent if possible. If the phone becomes a distraction, turn the ringer off for an hour so that you can concentrate on your task. Most of all, do not permit family and friends to distract them. Be firm with them and let them know that you are at work and cannot be disturbed for x amount of time. You will be glad you did. Change is as good as a holiday or so it goes. Is it really? From past experience, some changes can actually make things worse than they were before. What if the only thing we changed was to deal with things in a different way? Get a different perspective on things? I've written this article specifically for individuals contemplating change with the idea of making things better, brighter and different. This change could be anything from relationship/s, career, to relocating somewhere else (having a sea change is an example). It could also be in the form of personal development through attending courses, reading and networking. Whatever it is for you, it may possibly be that what you're searching for is available to you right now, with no need to look very far. It's called inner peace and with it comes a change of perspective - looking at life in a different way. A state of being that will allow you to get on with it' regardless of what's happening in your external environment. Basically, inner peace is a state of mind where you're not impacted by external circumstances, you simply just are'. Whenever I step into peace no issue agitates me, I have no attachment to anything; I just am. Quite simply, it's peaceful, serene. Inner peace: It sounds pretty clichd I know, but it is just that, peace on the inside whilst around you chaos reigns. For me the inside bit is the place I'd rather be. I liken it to watching a game of football from a front row seat. I can see how I relate to others and them to me, in my social, work, spiritual, and family life. I can also see the never ending possibilities of what life has to offer. This is where I get the big picture stuff. It's a place I love visiting to rebalance, regenerate, and centre myself. When I return and again become aware of my physical environment, the clarity to see how things really are is almost blinding. Clarity: when there is total clearness about everything and anything. It's when actions are totally understood as well as the consequences of those actions. I've personally yearned for change and have observed others with same. This desire for change can become all encompassing and when change fails to happen the way we'd like it to, or thought it would be, the disappointment can lead to hopelessness and in some ways be emotionally crippling. The adage The grass is greener on the other side of the fence' is not necessarily true. I've been there done that, although I failed to buy the t-shirt. All I needed mostly was a different way of looking at my situation. If you're contemplating creating major change in your life think carefully about why you want it in the first place. Maybe a different perspective is all the change that's required. Give yourself some time to truthfully answer and reflect on the following questions: 1. What would happen if I started to create change for myself? 2. What would happen if I left things unchanged? 3. Who will I become through having that change happen? 4. What needs to happen for me to truly get the most out of life? 5. Where will I be, and what will I be doing once I've changed what I wanted to? 6. How will this change affect your family and other areas of your life? 7. What would happen if you changed your attitude? 8. If you didn't change your attitude what would happen? 9. What is it that I need to do now in order to enjoy life the way it is? 10. Will it be worth it? 11. What will I lose? 12. What will I gain? 13. What are all the positive outcomes if I do not create change? (There's always a positive, even when we perceive something as negative). I had a huge 10 year goal until recently. After I jotted down all the positive outcomes if I didn't pursue my dream, I sighed with relief. It was much better for me and the family, not to have this particular outcome. Change can be challenging and scary. What was known before becomes outdated, friendships are outgrown, new ones are formed, and if things were comfortable previously, now it's time to become comfortable with the uncomfortable. Adjustment takes time. Learning to access inner peace can take time too. Some people fully immerse themselves in the change process, whereby others may take a little while longer and that's ok too. It's different for each of the six billion people on this planet. May change in whatever form you choose bring you success and abundance in all things great and wonderful. I looked at this kind man and felt deep sadness for him. He did not know who he was. ?Why do you believe that?? I asked. ?I didn?t do well in school, and I?ve made lots of mistakes in my life.? ?So you are basing your worth on your performance, right?? ?Of course.? David could not conceive of any other way of defining his worth other than through his performance ? which he never saw as good enough. I asked David to look inside ? at the essence of himself - and tell me what he sees. All he saw was emptiness. ?David, please close your eyes. Now imagine a wonderful being who loves you very much. Who comes to mind?? ?My grandfather. He died when I was young, but he really loved me.? ?Good. Now imagine that you are seeing yourself through the eyes of your grandfather. As a result of seeing himself as unworthy and inadequate, he did not treat himself well. He treated himself the way his parents had treated him ? with criticism and neglect. He was always trying to take care of everyone else, but rarely thought about taking care of himself. He was constantly abandoning himself emotionally, just as he had been emotionally abandoned by his parents. ?David, if you chose to see yourself as your grandfather saw you rather than how your parents saw you, how would you feel about yourself and how would you treat yourself?? ?I?ve just been thinking about that. I just realized that I treat my dog better than I treat myself! I would never judge my dog the way I judge myself.? ?So what would you do differently if you saw yourself the way your grandfather sees you?? ?I would stop judging myself as insufficient and inadequate. I?m a really good person. I am not at all insufficient or inadequate as a person. And I choose my friends based on who they are as people ? not on their performance. So I obviously value the very qualities that I possess!? ?What else would you do if you really valued who you are?? ?I would listen to my own feelings and take care of my own needs instead of taking care of everyone else?s feelings and needs. I would no longer see it as selfish to take care of myself instead of taking care of everyone else. I would be at least as attentive to myself as I am to my dog!? David was glowing. Why Procrastinators Are More Optimistic When Facts Show They Are: Less Healthy - Less Wealthy - Less Happy It's well known that procrastinators do not get as much done, which often means less money and more stress. And not just for the procrastinator, but those who have to work or live with procrastinators. According to one study, in 1978, 5% of the population admitted to procrastinating, today it's at 26%. Who knows how much that is costing us! It's estimated that 90% of the population procrastinate at one time or another. Males procrastinate more than females, and younger people procrastinate more than older people. Psychology Today Magazine states that procrastinators sabotage themselves, put obstacles in their own way, and choose paths that hurt their performance. Here's why it's getting worse… Your health is suffering A study was completed over a 6 month period showing that procrastinating lowers your immune system reducing resistance to colds and flu as well as stomach problems. The same people also suffered from insomnia. Procrastinators consume more alcohol than they intent to, which is another outcome of poor self-regulation. Your wealth is suffering People who are sicker pay more for wellness and that increases the burden on healthcare, and insurance companies who raise your rates and reduce benefits. Late tax filers spend approximately $400 more that on time filers. Last minute Christmas shoppers miss bargains and quality merchandise even doing without sometimes. Then why are procrastinators more optimistic? Well, it seems that procrastinators tell lies to themselves, according to the world's leading experts on procrastination, associate professors of psychology Joseph Ferrari, Ph.D of De Paul University in Chicago and Timothy Pychyl, Ph.D at Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada. Well haven't we all said it at one time, "I'll feel more like doing this tomorrow". And when tomorrow comes you don't feel anymore like doing it than you did yesterday. It was a big fat lie! And have you used these old standbys: "I work best under pressure - ah it's not that important - being short of time makes me more creative". All big fat lies! According to the experts you don't turn out to be more creative, you only feel that way, and you waste away your resources and get more stressed... And that's why you hang your head at night when the day is done and the work isn't. Five major reasons why you procrastinate… 1. The simplest reason you procrastinate is you don't want to do it. Why? Usually because of reasons 2, 3, 4 and 5. 2. One of the main reasons you procrastinate is you don't know what to do. The job or task you have is not clear to you and the steps aren't laid out, there is no direction, and you don't know where to start. 3. Another reason you procrastinate is you want to feel good now. But how can you feel good now when you have this project or task to do before you can feel good? And if you do not have a compelling picture of the completed task there is no promise of ever feeling good. 4. The fourth reason is fear of failure. And you can't even begin to consider being successful if you don't know exactly what it is you are going to do, and how the end result will turn out. 5. And the fifth reason is, like you need another, you have way too much to handle. You eat, sleep and breath overwhelm. Your prayer at night is "I hope I die before I wake so someone else this job will take". As a result… You will never know how much procrastinating has cost you. You can't add up all your time wasted, money spent, opportunities lost or emotional toil due to your procrastinating. You can't change the past but you don't have to repeat it. There is an old saying, "when is the best time to plant a tree? Twenty years ago. When is the next best time to plant a tree? Today"! It's a fact that procrastinators are made not born...we usually learn it in the family environment. That means we can re-learn a better way. Procrastinators are not bad planners or organizers. You must be an exceptional planner/organizer to juggle and put things off as well as you do. So don't run out and buy a daily planner to get organized or beat yourself up for not doing things because it's not about that. It's about getting past the problem of procrastinating. You can take the slow way and figure out how you procrastinate, what makes you procrastinate, and take steps to form a plan to do things better. Or you can hire a professional with the ability to do this for you, so you can get things done and feel good about yourself while doing it. So start now by considering how you will be as a person when procrastination and overwhelm is no longer a problem for you.
